Classic Chicken Fried Steak with Homemade Gravy
Nothing beats a classic Chicken Fried Steak with homemade gravy. This classic dish is a staple in Southern cooking and is sure to please the whole family. The great thing about this dish is that it takes no time to prepare and is easy to make. - 4 cube steaks
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
Ingredients For Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken Fried Steak
- In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Mix together until well blended.
- In a separate shallow bowl, pour the buttermilk. Working with one steak at a time, dip the steak into the buttermilk and then dredge it in the flour mixture. Make sure the steak is well-coated with the flour mixture.
- In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the steaks and cook for about 4 minutes per side or until golden brown. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Gravy
- Add the butter to the skillet and melt over medium-high heat. Add the flour and whisk together. Cook for about 1 minute.
- Slowly add the chicken broth and whisk to combine. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Whisk until smooth.
- Bring the gravy to a boil and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for about 10 minutes or until the gravy has thickened.
Step 3: Serve
- Return the steaks to the skillet and spoon the gravy over the top. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
- Serve the steaks topped with the gravy.
